Freshman shine for Riverview Girls in win over Normandy

The 1-10-1 Normandy Vikings faced off against the 3-11 Rams of Riverview Tuesday night.

Tuesday’s blow out marks the 3rd straight win for the Rams with recent victories against Affton and McCluer with tonight’s victory coming on the back of Freshman Amonye Allen.

Allen lead the team with 31 points, showing speed, impressive range, and finding ways to score from anywhere on the court. Amonye and her squad showed confidence from outside the paint, sinking the majority of shots from mid to outside, showing she’s the real deal. Coach Jamel Thompson spoke on Riverview’s perimeter game, “We’d rather shoot from inside around the basket but they were going in early in the game so we’ll take it”

The win wasn’t a complete solo effort. Senior Ja’ceauna Perkins finished with 18 points of her own, and the Rams kept the Vikings to under 20 points, coming up big on defense. “No matter what the lead was, they focused on defense” Thompson said.
The Rams’ defense didn’t fully click until the second half, leaving the Vikings with room to push back early, and allowed Normandy to draw a variety of shooting fouls on Riverview.

Thompson says, “It’s been an issue for us this year as far as committing fouls, so it’s something we are constantly trying to work on.”
The latter half of the match up saw the Rams more disciplined on defense and with their fouls, allowing them to run away with the game. The Vikings never lost their spark, but were just unable to overcome their first half deficit.
Freshman Amonye Allen is the Ram’s second leading scorer averaging 7.3ppg, just behind senior Gabriella Dickens’ 7.4. Allen is the team’s second leading rebounder as well, displaying skill on both ends of the court. Junior Jazmene Kaiser leads the team in rebounds.

When coach Thompson was asked about Amonye’s performance this year, he said, “I’m ecstatic.” He continued with, “She’s only a freshman…so to see her growth from the beginning of the season until now is impressive.”
The Lady Rams of Riverview have a lot to look forward to in the coming years with Amonye playing a key role in the team moving forward. The Rams will finish out their season against Hazelwood East, University City, and Northwest Cedar Hill and look to improve their overall record.
